One of its first products was the Macintosh Laryngoscope, then a revolutionary design invented by the late Sir Robert Macintosh, Professor of Anaesthetics. Expansion into export markets prompted a move to larger premises at Abingdon, and the name of the company was eventually changed to Penlon Ltd. In 1975 the company was acquired by InterMed, the healthcare subsidiary of Thomas Tilling plc.In October 1996 Penlon regained its status as an independent company, having been part of BTR plc since 1983.
